What The Infinity Symbol Can Teach You About Breaking Bad Habits

To break a bad habit, you’re merely discontinuing a pattern you were once engrossed in. It’s that simple (though not always easy).

Look at the picture above. That’s the symbol for infinity. The figure eight is considered a symbol for infinity because you can travel its path, without stopping, forever.

But when you really think about it, that’s also the symbol for bad habits. Because a bad habit is nothing more than a pattern you choose to continue, without stopping.

Whatever your bad habit is, envision that maintaining it is like perpetually choosing to walk a path that’s figure 8 shaped with high walls on either side.

You have freewill, though. So while the high walls are unscalable, there are doors every couple feet within the figure eight path, reminding you it’s unnecessary to continue traveling this path. You can stop walking the pattern any time by walking over to a door, opening it, and exiting.

Sometimes we lose sight of the fact that we’re sovereign over ourselves. That freewill means exactly that: we have the freedom to will ourselves to do anything we want.

That’s a pretty amazing power!

So let’s use it.

Now.
