Why You Shouldn’t Care What Other People Think About You

by Bamboo Forest

“At the center of worrying what others think of us is making what they think more important than what we think of ourselves.” ~Dr. Wayne Dyer

One question: What benefit will you receive from caring what others think of you? If there’s something beneficial you’ll derive from it, I’m for it. However, if there’s nothing you get in return, I’m entirely against it.

News flash: Caring what others think about you gives you no benefits. Zero, zilch, nada!

In addition to the above, caring what others think about you drains you of your vital energy and compromises your well being.

What can be more insane than choosing something that is not only bereft of benefit, but also compromises your life? Yeah, such a choice epitomizes insanity. And it’s one you shouldn’t partake in.

Have you ever had the experience of someone not liking you? It’s not the most pleasant experience, is it?

No, it’s not. But, truth is, from the higher perspective, it’s also irrelevant. Reality is we can never totally control the opinion people have of us. But since we can completely control what we think of ourselves, we must think well of ourselves. We should make our opinion of ourselves more important than the opinion of others!

When you’re self-conscious of what others think of you, you’re conveying to the world that their opinion of you is more important than your opinion of yourself. And when you really think about it, that’s insane. Why should their opinion of you hold more weight than your opinion of yourself?

It goes without saying I’m not condoning that you shouldn’t care what people think of you when you’re engaging in unethical activity. In that circumstance, caring what they think of you would actually benefit you.

But if someone, or a group thinks you’re not cool, or you’re not fun, or looks down on you for whatever reason: Don’t give a sh*t!

Walk with your head high, and be confident in who you are. Let that be your message to the world.

Thank you for expressing it this way —
“what’s the benefit?” not the usual “you’re valuable”.
Just this morning I was guilty of worrying what others think of me and now I see what’s the benefit of worrying?
Thanks!

@ bendedspoon: Indeed. Since you’re not getting anything in return and it even can diminish your life, why do it?

Cheers.

When I started tactics to stop worrying about what others think of me, I started feeling joy. Ppl that don’t know me whatsoever judge me, that’s right complete strangers! Why should I have to suffer for that? You’re right, it is insane to care. Great post!
